When the screen changes brightness on its own
Three separate systems can move your brightness without being asked. They look identical from the outside and are switched off in three different places.
A screen that dims when you did not touch anything is annoying in proportion to how mysterious it is. Once you can name the three mechanisms responsible, the mystery goes away and each one takes about twenty seconds to switch off.
One: the ambient light sensor
Many laptops and tablets carry a small light sensor near the webcam. When the room gets darker the system lowers the backlight; when a lamp comes on it raises it again. The intent is good and the execution is often heavy-handed, particularly in rooms with uneven light.
On Windows 11 the setting is at Settings › System › Display › Brightness & colour, described as changing brightness automatically when lighting changes. On Windows 10 it appears on the same Display page as a checkbox. If the option is absent, the machine has no sensor and this mechanism is not your culprit.
Two: content adaptive brightness
This one confuses far more people, because it responds to what is on screen rather than to the room. The system analyses the image and lowers the backlight during dark content, raising it again for bright content, saving power without an obvious loss of quality. When it works well you never notice. When it works badly you see the screen breathe as you scroll between a dark editor and a white document.
It is often controlled in two independent places, and switching it off in only one leaves it active:
- In Windows, under Display settings, described as adjusting based on content to help improve battery life.
- In the graphics vendor's own control panel, where it may be listed as display power saving, adaptive contrast or a similarly named power feature.
Some machines add a third place: the firmware setup screen, where a panel power-saving option may be enabled by default.
Cover the light sensor with a finger. If brightness changes, the sensor is active. If it does not, but the level shifts when you switch between a black and a white window, you are looking at content adaptive brightness.
Three: battery saver and power plans
Battery saver reduces brightness by a fixed percentage when the charge falls below a threshold. It is found under Settings › System › Power & battery, and its dimming behaviour can be switched off separately from the rest of the feature.
Windows 10 additionally keeps per-plan brightness levels in Control Panel, so a machine can be set to one level on mains power and another on battery. That change happens the instant the cable moves, which makes it easy to mistake for a sensor.

Should you switch it all off?
Not necessarily. A well-behaved ambient sensor genuinely reduces eye strain over a long day, because it moves the screen in the same direction the room is moving. The case for switching it off is strongest for colour-critical work, where a shifting backlight makes judgements unreliable, and for anyone who finds the transitions themselves distracting.
A reasonable middle path is to leave the ambient sensor on, switch content adaptive brightness off, and set battery saver to dim by a modest amount rather than a dramatic one.
