Getting two or three screens to agree
Two monitors set to fifty per cent can look nothing alike. Matching them is a job for your eyes, done in the right order.
Working across two mismatched screens forces your eyes to adapt every time you move a window. Over a day that adaptation is genuinely tiring, and most people never trace the tiredness back to its cause. The good news is that a careful half hour fixes it permanently.
Why the numbers lie
A brightness scale of nought to one hundred is a percentage of that panel's own maximum, not a measurement of light. One monitor may peak at 250 candela per square metre and another at 400. Set both to fifty and the second is substantially brighter. Panel technology compounds the difference: an IPS screen next to a VA screen will disagree about black level even when their white levels match.
The lesson is simple. Match by eye, then write down whatever numbers you land on so you can restore them later.
The method
- Fix the room first. Set the lighting to what you actually use for most of the day. Matching screens under a lamp you turn off at ten in the morning is wasted effort.
- Choose an anchor. Pick the screen with the lower maximum output, usually the older or smaller one, and set it to a comfortable level on its own. It cannot rise to meet a brighter neighbour, so everything else comes down to it.
- Use one test image. Open the same plain white page full screen on both displays. A blank document works. Avoid photographs, which invite you to judge colour instead of luminance.
- Compare at the join. Move a window so the same white area straddles the gap between the two screens. Differences that are invisible across a metre of desk are obvious at a shared edge.
- Adjust only the brighter screen. Bring it down until the seam disappears when you glance across it. Glance, do not stare — your eyes adapt within seconds and a long stare hides real differences.
- Check the dark end. Repeat with a mid-grey and then a near-black image. If white matches but black does not, adjust contrast slightly rather than brightness.
- Record the numbers. Note the final value from each monitor's own menu.
A screen facing a window and a screen facing a wall will never look matched, whatever their settings say. Fix geometry before optics: angle both displays away from direct light and make sure neither carries a reflection.
Colour temperature comes second
Once luminance matches, differences in white point become obvious — one screen looks bluish, the other yellowish next to it. Most monitors provide preset temperatures such as 6500 K, 7500 K and 9300 K, plus a custom mode with separate red, green and blue gains. Set both to the same nominal preset first; if they still disagree, nudge the custom gains on the screen you like less.
A warning worth heeding: adjust colour after brightness, never before. Changing the backlight level shifts perceived white point, so any colour work done first has to be redone.

Keeping them matched
Monitors drift. Backlights lose output slowly over years, and a screen that was matched in winter may need a nudge in summer as room light changes. A quick check with the white-window test every few months keeps the pair honest. If one display has a preset mode that reactivates after standby, switching it to a manual or custom mode stops it undoing your work each morning.
