How brightness works on Windows 11

Windows 11 tidied brightness into one panel and, in doing so, made its absence much more obvious. Here is a map of every place the setting lives.

On a laptop running Windows 11, brightness is two clicks away. On a desktop tower attached to the same version of Windows, the control usually is not there at all. That is not a fault, and it is not something a system update will change. It is a consequence of how Windows decides which displays it is allowed to command.

Quick Settings: the main control

The fastest route is the cluster of icons at the right-hand end of the taskbar — network, sound and battery. Selecting any of them opens Quick Settings, and the brightness slider sits at the top of that panel, marked with a small sun. Dragging it changes the backlight of the internal panel immediately.

The keyboard shortcut Windows logo key + A opens the same panel without aiming a pointer at anything, which is worth learning if you adjust brightness several times a day.

Worth knowing

If Quick Settings opens but shows no sun icon, Windows has not detected a display whose brightness it controls directly. That is the normal state on a desktop machine and on some docked laptops with the lid closed.

The Settings app

The full display page lives at Settings › System › Display. The brightness slider is the first item under Brightness & colour, and expanding that section reveals the automatic behaviours that Quick Settings hides: adjustment based on lighting, adjustment based on what is on screen, and the Night light schedule.

Keyboard keys

Most laptops carry a pair of brightness keys on the function row, usually marked with a small and a large sun. Depending on the machine, they either work directly or require the Fn key to be held at the same time. On many models this behaviour can be reversed in the firmware setup screen, under a heading such as Action Keys Mode or Hotkey Behaviour.

These keys talk to the same system service that the slider uses, so their steps and the slider position stay in sync. If the keys do nothing at all but the slider still works, the cause is almost always the manufacturer's hotkey software rather than the display itself.

What the slider actually changes

When Windows lowers brightness on a built-in panel, it reduces the power going to the backlight behind the liquid crystal layer. Less light passes through, black areas get closer to true black, and the panel draws less power. Nothing about the image is faked; the display is genuinely emitting less light.

That distinction matters, because some third-party approaches instead lay a translucent dark layer over the picture. The result looks dimmer but the backlight is still running at full output, so contrast suffers and the battery gains nothing. The difference is explained in dimming below the minimum.

Why the slider vanishes

Windows shows a brightness control only for a display it drives directly through the graphics driver. In practice that means:

  • The panel built into a laptop, tablet or all-in-one machine — controllable.
  • A monitor connected over HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C — not controllable by the standard slider, because the monitor stores its own brightness setting internally.
  • A laptop running with the lid shut and only an external screen active — no slider, for the same reason.
  • A virtual or remote-desktop session — no slider, because there is no physical backlight at the far end.

There is one more case that catches people out: a generic display driver. If Device Manager lists the graphics adapter as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the proper driver has not loaded, and brightness control is one of the first features to go missing.

A sensible starting point

Rather than aiming for a number, aim for a match. Open a page with a large white area and hold a sheet of ordinary printer paper next to the screen. Adjust until the white on screen and the white on paper look about equally bright. In a normally lit room that usually lands somewhere between forty and sixty per cent on the slider; in a dark room it will be far lower.
