When brightness control stops working
Almost every brightness fault falls into one of five categories. Working through them in order takes about ten minutes and avoids a great amount of guessing.
“Brightness does not work” describes at least five unrelated faults. Start by identifying which one you have, because the fixes share almost nothing.
Step one: name the symptom

Step two: no slider at all
Windows shows a brightness control only for a display it drives directly. Confirm which situation applies:
- Desktop PC with an external monitor — this is expected. See external monitor brightness.
- Laptop with the lid closed — expected. Open the lid and the slider returns.
- Laptop with the lid open and still no slider — a driver problem. Continue below.
Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. An entry reading Microsoft Basic Display Adapter means the manufacturer's driver is not loaded, and brightness is one of the features that goes with it. Then expand Monitors: if the generic monitor entry is disabled, enable it and restart.
Step three: the slider is frozen
A visible but unresponsive slider almost always points at the graphics driver. In order:
- Restart the machine. Brightness support is registered at start-up, and a driver that loaded badly often recovers.
- Obtain the graphics driver published for your exact model rather than a generic one. Machine makers often modify the vendor driver to add panel control.
- If the fault appeared immediately after a driver change, roll back to the previous version from the driver's properties in Device Manager.
- Check whether a workplace policy applies. On a managed machine, an administrator can lock display settings, and no local change will override that.
Note the current driver version somewhere before changing it. If a newer version makes things worse, you want to be able to get back to what you had.
Step four: the slider moves but nothing happens
On a laptop, this usually means the driver is accepting requests it cannot deliver — a mismatched panel driver, or a firmware setting that has taken control of the backlight. Check the firmware setup screen for a panel power-saving or brightness-control option and set it to the standard value.
On an external monitor, the command is probably not reaching the display at all. Work through the cable chain described in step five.
Step five: external monitor problems
The command that changes a desktop monitor's brightness travels down a fragile side channel in the video cable. Test it by elimination:
- Check the monitor's own menu. Find the option named DDC/CI, DDC Control or Computer Control and make sure it is enabled. This alone resolves a large share of cases.
- Remove everything in between. Connect the monitor directly to the graphics card with one cable. No dock, no hub, no KVM, no adapter.
- Try a different cable. Some inexpensive cables omit the data pins entirely while carrying a perfect picture.
- Try a different port. Native DisplayPort and HDMI connections are more reliable than converted ones.
- Reintroduce hardware one item at a time. The item that breaks control is your answer, and the fix is usually to route the display around it.
- Switch off preset picture modes. An eco or dynamic mode can override manual brightness after every wake from standby.
Step six: when nothing works
A minority of displays never accept software brightness commands. Very old models, televisions used as monitors, portable screens powered over a single USB cable, and some professional displays with locked calibration all fall into this group.
What remains available: the monitor's own buttons, a supplied remote control, a gamma adjustment that darkens the signal without touching the backlight, and better room lighting. The trade-offs of the third option are set out in dimming below the minimum.
